Three axle open wagon Olw/s 71602 enters service

The first concept for a three axle open wagon started many years ago, but the chassis and parts acquired for the project were pillaged for another, more easily completed, project. Gradually, alternative spares were built up and, in October 2020, work started on the chassis. This is a standard LGB long wheelbase chassis, with a slot cut into it to accommodate a third axle.

White metal axleguards were fitted to the solebars, and the whole lot sprayed black. A spare LGB axle carrier was modified to slide sideways in the slot.

For the body, a spare LGB open wagon was obtained and reduced in height. This was then cut in half, and a new section of floor added to span the gap.

New doors were then made to fill the resultant gap, using 3mm foamboard. Some strapping was made up from Plastruct and some detail parts added.

Several coats of paint later, and it was ready for the transfers to be applied.

And finally, ready ready to enter service, the wagon is finished.
